Samsung Galaxy Ace Review
From afar, the Samsung Galaxy Ace looks like a smaller Samsung Galaxy S, which looks like an iPhone.. OK, let’s not get too carried away with the Apple Patents. Samsung’s made the right sacrifices to keep the cost of the Galaxy Ace down, but this Android phone is packed with fun features and looks much more expensive than it is, but why didn’t it ace the review? The Ace’s design is simple but sophisticated, with a smoothly glossy front panel. Samsung supplies you with two back covers of your choosing, a premium, grippy black one, and a cheap, plasticky white one. Its 3.5-inch screen and squarish case definitely look similar to the iPhone 4, but it’s mostly plastic rather than metal, which makes the overall device feel cheap and light.
Perhaps thanks to its smallish screen, the Ace’s battery life is insanely good. We easily squeezed 35 hours of use out of the Ace without charging overnight, with Wi-Fi and GPS both turned on.
The Ace sports Android’s fantastic Web browser, which displays pages pretty much as they would look on a desktop PC. Unfortunately, the Ace isn’t powerful enough to support Flash, so you won’t get to play the videos and other Flash objects that pepper the Internet. Furthermore, its 320×480-pixel resolution isn’t as sharp as on more expensive phones. It’s very usable for most things, but small text on webpages required some serious zooming to read clearly. Thankfully, zooming in and out is fast and intuitive thanks to multi-touch support.
But the main bullet to the foot for Samsung is the halfbaked TouchWiz UI. The iPhone-esque design is so obvious, you’ll here smirks around you when you open the app drawer. The choice of colours and fonts used is also questionable, and the amount of times the device crashes is unbelievable; we tried to update the Samsung Appstore and had to un-crash it with a battery pull. Terrible.
The verdict? Thanks to its sleek, squarish looks, the Samsung Galaxy Ace is better than most of its low cost counterparts, but a low resolution screen, cheap build quality, and terrible software, give the device a nasty 4/10. [AC]
